How Therapeutic Massage Relieves Back Pain & Neck Pain

There are many different healing therapies you can take to help your body function correctly. At Ten Oaks Health and Wellness, we offer the treatment of a wide range of common conditions through holistic services including massage therapy.

Muscle tension can build slowly. It may start as tight shoulders after a long day, stiffness in the lower back, soreness after activity, or neck discomfort that keeps returning after sitting at a desk. For many people, massage therapy offers a calm, hands-on way to support the body when stress, posture, overuse or daily movement patterns begin to create discomfort.

At Ten Oaks Health and Wellness in Glenelg, MD, massage therapy is offered as part of a whole-body approach to wellness. Care may support patients dealing with back pain, neck pain, muscle tension, stress-related tightness, soreness, recovery needs and general relaxation.

The goal is not to force the body or make unrealistic promises. The goal is to listen, understand what the patient wants to accomplish, and provide a therapeutic massage experience that fits their needs.

Ten Oaks Health and Wellness serves patients from Glenelg, Ellicott City, Clarksville, West Friendship, Columbia and the surrounding Howard County area.

Therapeutic Massage for Back Pain, Neck Pain & Muscle Tension

Back pain and neck pain are often connected to more than one area of the body. Tight shoulders can affect the neck. Hip tension can influence the lower back. Stress can cause muscles to stay guarded even when the body is trying to rest.

Therapeutic massage may help reduce muscle tension, improve comfort and support better movement when soft tissues are tight, sore or overworked. Some patients seek massage therapy for focused work on a specific area. Others want a more relaxing session that helps the whole body settle.

Massage therapy may be helpful when discomfort is related to:

  • Back tightness
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder tension
  • Muscle soreness
  • Stress-related tightness
  • Posture-related discomfort
  • General stiffness
  • Recovery after physical activity
  • Daily fatigue from work, driving or sitting

When symptoms involve joint restriction, recurring pain or movement problems, massage therapy may also work well alongside chiropractic care in Glenelg, MD.

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS

Two years ago, I suffered from a pretty traumatic health event

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Molin’s for almost two years now and I have to say… Dr Glenn is in a class of his own. I haven’t had a chance to have much clinical interaction with any of the other doctors in the practice, but from the moment I stepped through the door, Dr. Glenn has gone above and beyond in every way possible. Two years ago, I suffered from a pretty traumatic health event, and through the whole experience, his team was sensitive, attentive, and effective in helping to bring a restorative balance to my physical and emotional health. He really looks beyond the surface, and he demonstrates time and time again how much he values me as not only a client but as a person. He takes a very holistic approach, attending to every detail and providing support wherever he can. I really appreciate the professional atmosphere of the practice, and I feel as though I cannot give a strong enough endorsement of him and his team. These guys are amazing people and magicians on the chiropractic table. Five stars from me!

I am seeing Dr Molin for Hip Pain.

My visits with Dr. Molin center are always wonderful. I am seeing Dr Molin for Hip Pain. His treatments are always effective, in that I am pain free for almost a week. Since the pain is from arthritis, it does return, but I am happy with the progress. Dr Molin is an excellent Chiropractor who knows his craft. Besides being a master in chiropractic treatments, he is also very knowledgeable about general health and alternative treatments. He is a good resource and gives good advice in those areas. It is such an honor to have him for a doctor!

I didn’t realize they could help with injuries as well as misalignments.

I have been going to this practice for some time. However, I didn’t realize they could help with injuries as well as misalignments. I strained my foot and was told to wrap it and take Aleve by Urgent Care. However, I still had pain after a week and my hip hurt. I went to Dr. Molin who knew what to do and the treatment helped alleviate the pain in the foot and hip and reduce inflammation. I go back for another treatment and will be given exercises to do. I liked how he explained what was going on and during the treatment asked about pain level before doing manipulations. The friendly staff who greet you and who help with the physical therapy also make the experience great!

These Doctors are real professionals.

I’m a physician a Doctor, and have been seen by Dr. Molin twice, one for my back and another, this time, for a problem in my left hand. These Doctors are real professionals. Why I go to them rather that at a MD, because they take care of you. The MDs say hello to you and send you to a number of tests, Xray, MRI, Lab test before they talk to you. That is what medicine is now, and must of the MDs are employees of hospital or big practices. They do not care about you as we just to do. When I was in practice I talk to a patient for half and hour minimum, and have my diagnostic in that time, then may send tests for confirmation. Dr. Molin is very well trained and will care for you. Recommended them without hesitation.

Dr. Molin was a huge help during my pregnancy

Dr. Molin was a huge help during my third trimester of pregnancy. I was having difficulty even walking around the house from my SPD. With treatment, I was able to comfortably walk and go about my day.

Most pleasant and friendly office

The team at the office is one of the most pleasant and friendly at any office. Too often, doctor offices are filled with admin employees that would rather stare at computer screens or talk amongst themselves. The team is engaging and caring. It completely transforms the usual sterile doctor visit. Little things like addressing patients by name, engaging in casual conversations and remembering repeat patients go a long way to creating a more than comfortable environment.

Dr. Molin saw me on time and did a wonderful job

This crotchety 74-year old suffering from severe arthritis, poor hearing and other age related health problems, tripped over his cat and fell bruising knees, arm and ear. As I experienced sharp pain in my back when getting out of my chair it was clear that I’d done some damage. After a few days treating the pain with a heating pad (learned that this did more damage) there wasn’t any improvement. So, I called to make an appointment with Dr. Molin. Reception was very helpful and managed to get me an appointment for the next day. Forms were sent to me to fill in an advance of my visit. My only criticism is that the form is poorly designed – boxes are too small and, for my weakening eyesight, difficult to read. The boxes are so small that, with my shaky handwriting, I had difficulty filling the boxes. I strongly recommend that somebody redesign their forms and then, using Adobe Acrobat Professional, generate PDF forms which can be filled in and then printed. This isn’t difficult to do. Anyway, Dr. Molin saw me on time and did a wonderful job of diagnosing and treating my problem. Most importantly, he explained, in simple terms that I could understand, what had happened. He was very patient and understanding. After Dr. Molin manipulated my back and his pleasant staff used TENS treatment, I went home and didn’t experience any pain when getting in and out of my chair. Today, a day later, I’m experiencing mild discomfort when getting out of the chair. I’m confident that another treatment scheduled for tomorrow will be effective and it won’t be long before my back is completely cured.

Thank you so much !

It may sound silly, but after my appointment I could sit down at the table with my family and enjoy dinner. Prior to that, I spent several days lying down on the floor due to excruciating back and sciatic pain. My only regret was not going to then sooner. Thank you so much!

Greg

My improving health is proof that his methods work wonders.

Each patient really matters as a person. They take your overall good health as their goal. It is an added benefit that Dr. Molin is intuitive about how to get the best results. He takes the time to assess your mood and stress level as well as your physical state. My improving health is proof that his methods work wonders.

When Massage Therapy May Be Helpful

People often wait until discomfort becomes difficult to ignore before scheduling care. Massage therapy can be useful earlier, especially when tension keeps returning or affects how the body feels during normal daily activities.

You may benefit from massage therapy if you notice:

  • Tight muscles after work or exercise
  • Recurring neck and shoulder tension
  • Lower back soreness
  • Stress held in the upper back or jaw
  • Muscle fatigue after standing, lifting or driving
  • Posture-related tightness from desk work
  • Reduced comfort during movement
  • A need for recovery support and relaxation

Massage therapy is not a replacement for medical care when symptoms are severe or unusual. If pain is sharp, worsening, associated with weakness, numbness, fever, unexplained weight loss, chest pain or difficulty controlling movement, a medical evaluation may be needed.

A Personalized Massage Experience at Ten Oaks Wellness

At Ten Oaks Health and Wellness, massage therapy begins with a conversation. The therapist takes time to understand what you want to accomplish during the session, whether that is focused therapeutic work, relaxation, muscle relief or support for a specific area of tension.

Heather Voss, LMT is Ten Oaks Health and Wellness’s massage therapist. She began her career in 2007 after graduating from the Cayce Reilly School of Massage. Her background includes several massage therapy modalities, including Neuromuscular Therapy, Reflexology, Acupressure, Craniosacral, Myofascial, Prenatal and Swedish Massage.

Heather also studied the trademarked Cayce/Reilly Massage, which combines components of Deep, Local, Neuropathic, Osteopathic, Spinal and Swedish Massage Therapy techniques.

This range of training allows the massage experience to be adapted to the patient. Some people need focused work on a tight or painful area. Others need a calmer session that helps reduce stress and support relaxation. A personalized approach helps make the visit more comfortable, useful and appropriate for the person receiving care.

Massage Therapy for Stress and Whole-Body Wellness

Stress often shows up in the body before people notice it clearly. The shoulders rise. The jaw tightens. The neck feels stiff. Breathing becomes shallow. The lower back may feel guarded after long hours of sitting or standing.

Massage therapy can give the nervous system and soft tissues a chance to settle. Many patients value massage not only because it may help with sore muscles, but because it gives them time to slow down and reconnect with the body.

For patients who are dealing with busy schedules, physical stress, repetitive work, family responsibilities or recovery from activity, massage therapy can be part of a realistic wellness routine.

How Massage Therapy Works with Chiropractic Care and Active Release

Massage therapy can be helpful on its own, but it can also support other services when the body needs a more complete approach.

For example, a patient with back pain may have both joint restriction and muscle tension. A patient with neck pain may have posture-related stiffness, tight shoulders and limited mobility. A patient recovering from repetitive strain may need soft tissue support, movement guidance and better daily habits.

Depending on the evaluation and the patient’s goals, massage therapy may be used alongside:

The right combination depends on the person. Some patients need relaxation-focused care. Others need more targeted therapeutic work. Others benefit from a coordinated plan that addresses both soft tissue and movement patterns.
